Sohail Wahedi is since November 2016 a PhD Candidate in legal theory. His PhD-project, which has been supervised by prof.dr. Wibren van der Burg and dr. Jeroen Temperman, focuses on the relationship between law and religion in liberal democracies. This project’s hypothesis is that in law and religion debates we may discern a rhetorical mechanism of abstraction that marginalises, neutralises, and reframes the religious dimension of contentious manifestations, such as male circumcision and face-covering dresses. Moreover, the project will engage with theoretical debates on whether there are convincing grounds for the constitutional protection of religious freedom, and will critically reconstruct the available legal and normative framework on religious freedom. The methods used will be a combination of philosophical and conceptual analyses as well as doctrinal research.
